About this extension

■ Chrome

We want to end the situation where someone goes unprotected simply because they cannot pay.

Soyogi Security Shield is a free, supplementary tool for people who cannot afford paid security software. It is not a replacement for antivirus software, and it is not a replacement for the protection already built into Chrome. It adds one more layer on top of what you already have.

■ What it does
It downloads two public lists of dangerous sites to your own computer every hour. When you open a page, it compares that address with the list stored on your computer, and if the address is on the list, it stops the page from loading and shows a warning screen.

Sites that are not on the lists are not stopped. It cannot prevent every danger, so please keep using it alongside Chrome Safe Browsing and your antivirus software.

■ How it relates to the protection already in Chrome
Chrome includes Safe Browsing, which is on by default and warns you about dangerous sites that Google knows about. Please leave it turned on. This tool does not replace it. It simply adds one more check against two other sources, OpenPhish, which lists phishing sites, and URLhaus, which lists sites that distribute malware.

Site warnings from the security feature built into Windows run inside Microsoft Edge and do not work in Chrome by default. This tool runs only inside Chrome, and it does not stop or replace your antivirus software.

■ About the number of entries
The number of entries in the lists goes up and down from day to day. You can see how many are stored right now by clicking the extension icon. We want you to be able to check the real number at any time, so we do not print a fixed number in this description.

■ What it never collects
It does not collect any record of the pages you visit. All checking happens on your own computer, and there is no mechanism that sends the address you are opening to the outside. The only outside communication is receiving the lists once an hour.

■ Language
The popup and the warning screen are available in Japanese and English, switchable with one button. We keep the wording as plain as we can.

■ Who it is for
It was made for people who cannot buy security software for financial reasons, people who are not familiar with computers, young people and young carers, people struggling to make ends meet, and those who support them.

■ Why it asks for access to all sites
To compare the address you are opening with the list stored on your own computer. It does not read the contents of the page. Neither the address nor the result of the check is sent anywhere.

■ Cost
It is free. There are no charges and no ads.

■ The source code is open
All of the source code is published, so anyone can read exactly what this extension does and confirm for themselves that it does not collect browsing history. It is released under the MIT License, so anyone is free to use, modify, and redistribute it.
https://github.com/Mai-M-2023/soyogi-shield
We chose this license because we want this tool to keep working for the people who need it, even after we are gone.

■ About the developer
